Responsive or unresponsive - which yoyo do I need?
Responsive if you cannot bind yet, unresponsive once you can. A responsive yoyo comes back with a tug, so the first throw, the sleeper and the first mounts are learnable in days - that is the Starter Yoyo. An unresponsive yoyo only returns with a bind, which is what long string tricks, whips and fingerspins need - that is the Pro Yoyo and the Banger. If you want one purchase that does both, the Starter Yoyo Set includes the concave bearing that makes the Starter Yoyo unresponsive when you are ready.
Which yoyo is right for my level?
- Starting out: Starter Yoyo - responsive, plastic, durable, ready out of the box.
- Can bind, want fingerspins and long combos: Pro Yoyo - unresponsive, bimetal, fingerspin hub.
- Competition and modern trend tricks: Banger - unresponsive, bimetal, extra wide, signature model.
- Offstring (4A): Offstring 4A Yoyo.
Most players outgrow the first yoyo in two to three months. Plan for it: the Complete Yoyo Set has both stages in one box.
How do I throw a yoyo?
The first throw is the trick every other trick is built on.
- Wind the string fully onto the yoyo.
- Hold it palm up, string on your middle finger.
- Throw straight down with a smooth flick of the wrist.
- Tug to return (responsive) or bind (unresponsive), and catch palm down.
- Repeat until it is boring. Then learn the sleeper.
From there, the yoyo tricks in learning order.
How do I put a new string on a yoyo?
- Take the old string off.
- Open the loop at the end of the new string and slide it around the bearing.
- Cut to length: with the yoyo on the floor, the string should reach your belly button.
- Tie a slipknot for your middle finger and pull it snug.
- Throw once to check the spin.
Change strings often - every 30 to 120 minutes of practice on a new string is normal. Keep a pack of yoyo strings with the yoyo.
How do I learn yoyo tricks?
In order. Skipping the basics makes every later trick harder.
- Get a responsive yoyo.
- Set up the string and wind it properly.
- Land the first throw and the sleeper.
- Follow the ladder in the SkillAddicts app - each trick has a tutorial, and the next one only opens when you have landed this one.

Which yoyo does a pro use?
An unresponsive bimetal - aluminium body with stainless steel weight rings for spin time and stability.
