Sand sits still when it lands and stalls easy. That is the Starter Footbag - 8 panels, suede, about 55 g - the bag every player learns on. Metal is heavier, faster, predictable. That is the Pro Footbag - 32 panels, 60 to 64 g - the bag stalls, delays and full combos are built on. Most players end up with both. The Starter Footbag Set is both, for less than the two apart.

Shoes matter more than you think

Footbag is played on the flat of the foot. Quantum are hacky sack shoes with a light sole and big flat kicking areas, handmade in Czechia. They are in the Complete Footbag Set with both bags and a carry bag - the setup of someone who is not stopping.

What is a footbag?

A footbag is the player's name for a hacky sack: a small, round, stitched bag filled with sand or metal pellets that you keep in the air with your feet. Freestyle footbag is the discipline of doing tricks with it - kicks, stalls, delays and combos - alone or in a circle. Sand or metal fill - which hacky sack should I get?

Sand to learn, metal to control. A sand-filled bag (around 55 g) is slower and more forgiving, which is what you want while your feet are learning where the bag is. A metal-filled bag (60 to 64 g) is heavier and more predictable, which is what stalls, delays and combos need. Most players own both: the Starter Footbag for kicks and the Pro Footbag for stalls - the Starter Footbag Set is exactly those two bags.

Panel count matters less than the fill. An 8 panel bag is simple and cheap to replace; a 32 panel bag is rounder and holds its shape through hard stalls, which is why the Pro Footbag has 32.

How do I learn to play hacky sack?

Get the right bag, wear shoes, and follow a path instead of guessing.

Start with the Starter Footbag.
Wear flat, firm shoes - Quantum are made for it, any sport shoe works to begin with. Never barefoot.
Learn basic kicks with one foot, then alternate both feet.
Add stalls and revolutions, then clipper moves and combos.
