The trick in steps
- Throw sideways
Throw sideways as in Texas Cowboy, but aim lower.
- Make an L shape
Make an L shape with your non-throw hand and hold the string up.
- Keep it spinning sideways
Let the yoyo spin sideways while the string makes the tornado shape.
- Tug and catch
Before you bring the yoyo back, move both hands to the same level. Then tug back and catch it.

- Throw hard and horizontal
- Pop the yoyo up to the height of your throw hand before catching it
